India’s largest passenger car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, officially announced an increase in the prices of its various cars between 1% and 4.7% to compensate for the hike in the input cost. Maruti proposes to implement the revised prices from January 27 onwards. However, Maruti is yet to specify the product wise increase in prices. But this is expected to compensate in a small way for higher input costs, which have gone up sharply in the last few quarters.

Most auto manufacturers in India are currently in the process of upgrading their auto products to the Bharat Stage 6 emission norm, which will be effective from April 2020. The higher prices are also meant to partially compensate for the higher standards of compliance called for by the new emission norms. Automakers usually make price increase announcements to attract customers and reduce stocks at dealerships at year end.
