One of the key reasons for the sharp 2.7% spike in the stock price of IRCTC on 24 December was the revision in tariffs for food items by the Ministry of Railways. Ministry of Railways revised the tariff of Standard Meals on Static Units over Indian Railways.

Revised service-wise tariff for Express / Mail trains

Veg Breakfast (Rs.35)

Non-Veg breakfast (Rs.45)

Standard Veg meal – (Rs.70)

Standard meal (Egg Curry) – (Rs.80)

Standard Meal ( Chicken Curry) – (Rs.120)

The increase varies from 10-15% and would be compensated by a visible improvement in quality of food and hygiene.

There will be separate rates applicable for Rajdhani and Duronto trains. Since IRCTC operates on fixed margins, this move will help them get a better profitability in the business.
