This issue has been simmering since 2017 since Trump took power but the job losses caused by COVID-19 has made matters worse for the IT companies. Donald Trump has warned that H1-B visas could be suspended any time soon. It may be recollected that H1-B visa is the most among IT companies like TCS, Wipro, Infosys and HCL Tech to send software specialists abroad for implementing projects onsite. The catch is that India accounts for 70% of H1-B visas issued by the US and Trump has held the view that IT companies have misused H1-B visas to take away American jobs. It is just that the joblessness post COVID-19 has aggravated the situation. The Fed estimated on 10 Jun that US GDP growth could contract by 6.5% while unemployment could touch 9.5%. This could create a slippery situation for Trump as he will have to answer for the job losses with Presidential elections coming up later in 2020. This H1-B visa may be driven by the need to keep Americans happy.
