Alibaba is not laying-off all its employees in India but only the employees of its subsidiary, UC Web. Along with other Chinese apps, the government has already suspended UC Web operations in India. Hence Alibaba has laid-off 90% of its 350 workforce. Employees were given a minimum of notice of 30 days. This was the outcome of 59 Chinese apps banned.

UC Web reported it had complied with the government directive and stopped the service. UC Web has been operating its mobile browser in India since 2009. Employees at Alibaba’s video-blogging platform, Vmate, have also been laid off. UC Browser has 43 crore global active users of which 13 crore are in India, making it second most popular after Chrome.
