There are two aspects to the AGR demand. There is the self-assessment angle that is done by the telecom company and there is the DOT assessment done by the Department of Telecom. The DOT has estimated the total dues of Vodafone at Rs.53,000 crore. Earlier, Vodafone had paid Rs.3354 crore and has now paid an additional Rs.3500 crore taking their total payout to the DOT to Rs.6854 crore. As per Vodafone Idea, this is the total principal amount as per their assessment. Of course, the principal assessment of DOT is much higher. But Vodafone and other telcos are still negotiating with the DOT for waiver of interest and penalty considering the tight situation that the industry finds itself in.
