On 31 August, the honourable Supreme Court issued a notice to the TN government concerning Vedanta’s appeal against the Madras High Court order, which barred Vedanta from reopening its copper smelter plant in Tuticorin.

The copper smelter has been shut since May 2018 after protests over the unit’s environmental pollution ended in a confrontation between police and protesters. It is reported that 13 demonstrators died in the police firing on that day.

However, the SC did not grant any interim relief to Vedanta. Instead it asked Vedanta’s counsels to argue for a stay of the high court’s order in the next hearing. Vedanta had moved the Supreme Court on 26 August.

Then it had challenged the Madras HC order which did not give permission to Vedanta to start the plant. Sterlite Tuticorin accounted for one-third of India’s overall refined copper output, forcing India into copper imports.
