It is not the government but the Ministry of Consumer Affairs that has written to e-commerce giants like Flipkart and Amazon pulling them up for not displaying the mandatory declarations including country of origin. Specific links have also been highlighted.

The ministry has asked both firms to provide details about the seller including nature and ownership of the firm, incorporation documents, as well as residential details of persons responsible for the conduct including police jurisdiction under which they reside.

The ecommerce firms have been given a period of 15 days to provide these details along with an explanation. The ministry has warned that failure to provide requisite details will result in action being initiated against Amazon and Flipkart.

E-commerce and food delivery firms have repeatedly had several meetings with the consumer affairs department as well as senior officials of the DPIIT regarding the addition of country of origin tag to online listing of products. This is more to keep a tab on products that originate in China.

Ecommerce firms have remonstrated that while country of origin tag was being followed for new listings, the problem is with existing listings. The ecommerce firms have asked for more time of at least six months as they have to process hundreds of millions of products.
