In a surprise move, the government hiked the excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs.3 each. The main purpose was to boost revenue collections by taking advantage of the declining global crude oil price. This is exactly the strategy adopted by the government when crude prices were crashing during the 2014-15 period. Now the excise duty on petrol and diesel stands enhanced to Rs.22.98 and Rs.18.83 respectively. The sharp fall in oil prices has come as a blessing in disguise for the Modi government as it will now be able to hike duties without increasing the pressure on the people. The benefit of reduction of crude prices in the first quarter has significantly gone to the consumers the government may not look to reap some revenue benefits. It may be recollected that crude prices have halved in the last two months.
