EPFO or the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation is also known as the retirement body for Indian employees. It regularly revises the interest rate to be paid to subscribers of Provident Fund.

The Central Board of Trustees (CBT), which is headed by the Labour Minister is the apex decision making body of the EPFO which finalises the rate of interest on PF deposits for a financial year.

However, the CBT requires the approval of the Finance Ministry to change or retain interest rates. Thus, the interest is credited in subscribers’ accounts only after the Finance Ministry’s approval.
