A Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) scheme is a small-savings account backed by the Government of India exclusively for the Indian girl child. The government’s objective behind launching this small savings scheme was to encourage parents to open accounts in their daughter’s names so that they can start saving for their education and marriage early on.

Only parents and legal guardians of girl children can open the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) scheme. However, depositors can be different persons, i.e. is individuals other than the parents/legal guardians. Thus, anyone can deposit amount in to the account. Do note, however, the tax-benefit under Section 80C for the deposited amount can only be claimed by the parent or the legal guardian not by the depositor.
