The Central Drug Standard Control Organization or CDSCO is expected to review and gives its final call on the Serum Institute application in the current week. Serum Institute had applied to the regulator for emergency use authorization of its COVID-19 vaccine. Serum is bringing to India the vaccine jointly developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.

The Indian government has aggressive plans to vaccinate nearly 30 crore people in the first phase of drive. This will be offered to 1 crore healthcare workers, along with 2 crore frontline and essential workers and 27 crore elderly above the age of 50 years. For this process to commence, the vaccine approval needs to be completed on a war footing.

However, the Serum/Oxford/Astra vaccine is only one of the eight COVID-19 vaccine candidates that are being considered. This includes the Pfizer-BionTech vaccine, Moderna vaccine, Russian Sputnik vaccine, J&J vaccine as well as around 3 indigenously developed vaccines at different stages of clinical trials. This includes Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.
