Even as the Biden euphoria ruled the markets and the FPIs continued to pump funds aggressively into India, it resulted in 9 out of the top 10 companies gaining market cap to the tune of Rs.230,000 crore during the week.

The big news was that the action seems to be shifting back to the heavyweight financial space after a long gap. After a lull, it was good to see the HDFC twins leading the rally instead of the traditional favourites in the recent past like RIL and the IT pack.

During the week, the Sensex also soared by a record 2279 points or roughly 5.75% even as the Nifty settled above the psychological 12,500 mark. This was driven by all round buying in the front line heavyweights as a mix of ETF money and long only investors gave a boost.

The market cap of HDFC Bank jumped by Rs.68,430 crore while HDFC added Rs.38,484 crore to its market cap. Even ICICI Bank and Kotak Bank added about Rs.34,000 crore each to their market cap. Clearly, the action was largely focused on the financials during the week.

Infosys was another major gainer adding Rs.22,500 crore to its market cap. Stocks like TCS, Airtel, HUL and HCL Tech added around Rs.28,000 crore between them. The sole exception was Reliance Industries which ended up losing around Rs.17,142 crore in the week.
