The week regained the Sensex levels of 40,000 once again after a gap and the Nifty got very close to the 12,000 levels although it stopped shy of that level in the ultimate analysis. Here is a quick peek at the specific stocks that drove the index in the previous week.

During the week that ended on 23 October, Friday, six out of the ten most valuable companies on the NSE in terms of market capitalization added Rs.86,684 in terms of market value. The week clearly belonged to the banks after the stellar Q2 results of HDFC Bank.

In fact, HDFC Bank was the biggest gainer on the Nifty adding nearly Rs.20,199 crore to its market value in one week. Meanwhile HDFC added another Rs.18,147 crore to market value while Bharti Airtel added Rs.17,894 crore in market capitalization.

There were also other gainers like ICICI Bank which added Rs.14,415 crore to its market cap while another large private sector banks, Kotak Bank, also added Rs.9204 crore. Clearly, there was a lot of enthusiasm in banking stocks ahead of banking results week.

Most of these gains were neutralized by 2 giants losing value in a big way. The big value loser was Reliance Industries which gave up Rs.42,567 crore in market cap followed by TCS losing Rs.28,437 crore worth of market value. The declines in Hindustan Unilever and Infosys were much smaller in comparison to the heavyweights.
