There appears to be some hope of a resolution as talks between S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart appears to have moved towards a temporary truce. In the last 3 months, tensions have led to several clashes along the Galwan Valley and Pangong Lake.

The India-China discussions took place in Moscow on the sidelines of a Russia-China regional meet. The good news is that the talks resulted in a five point joint statement, which shows some progress being made by the two nations.

Both countries agreed that any clash was not in the interest of either nation. Both the foreign ministers also agreed that the border troops of both sides should continue the dialogue and early disengagement was essential so that both could focus on economies.

India did express strong reservations over the amassing of troops on the border by China. India also underscored that China had not provided any credible explanation or justification for the surge in deployment of troops in Ladakh.

At best, the talks appear to have given some breathing space to both sides. It is clear that the strong action in Ladakh by India appears to have brought China to the negotiating table.
