The correction in the last week was quite sharp with the Nifty closed below the crucial 15,000 level on Friday. Even the benchmark Sensex closed below the 51,000 mark having lost over 650 points in a single week. These two levels will be crucial during the coming week and could prove to be a temporary resistance for the markets.

The advance / decline or the A/D ratio was deeply unfavourable on Friday at 12:38 and the pressure on the bank stocks is likely to continue. On Friday, there was some shift to defensives and that will continue at these levels. One risk for the markets stems from bond yields moving up sharply in the recent past and that is never a good trend.

Foreign flows continue to be robust overall although FPIs were net buyers of just Rs.118 crore on Friday even as DFIs sold Rs.1175 crore. In the first 3 weeks of February, FPIs infused Rs.25,000 crore into Indian markets, most of them coming into equities. This inflow is 70% more than the infusion in January 2021, and largely driven by the Union Budget.

In terms of global cues on Friday, the US markets were lacklustre as were most of the Asian markets. European markets in France and Germany saw some positive movement on Friday, even as the FTSE remained static like the rest of the world markets. SGX Nifty is almost flat in early trades on Monday in the absence of triggers and Asia could hold the key.
