AstraZeneca has partnered with Serum Institute (part of the Poonawala group) to supply 1 billion doses of University of Oxford's potential COVID-19 vaccine to the lower income nations. Before the end of 2020, Serum will provide 400 million doses.

Why is this significant? This could mean that if all goes according to plan then millions of Indians will get access to COVID-19 vaccine shots before the end of 2020. Serum has already secured a licence to mass produce the University of Oxford Vaccine.

The vaccine will use a weaker virus such that it does not trigger the disease but stimulates the immune system. Currently, Serum Institute’s BCG vaccine is also undergoing trials in Australia and Germany to evaluate if it prevents people from acquiring COVID-19. Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum, announced that the company had earmarked $100 million for the vaccine project.
