You must be aware that the DCGI has approved 2 vaccines for its anti-COVID drive in India viz. the Covishield vaccine developed jointly by Pfizer and Biontech and brought to India by Serum Institute as well as the Covaxin developed by Bharat Biotech indigenously in association with the National Institute of Virology, Pune and the ICMR.

With the emergency usage approval or EUA from the DCGI, the Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech floated by Krishna Ella is planning to produce 700 million doses or 70 crore doses of Covaxin by December 2021. Bharat Biotech currently has around 20 million doses and plans to scale up across four of its facilities in different parts of India.

The reason for the approval controversy is that unlike the other vaccine candidates, Bharat Biotech is yet to release the efficacy data of its vaccine. That is because these vaccines are still undergoing Phase-3 trials which will only completed by March 2021. DCGI has also permitted Bharat Biotech to conduct trials on children above the age of 12.

Reacting to the criticism of the approval, chairman Krishna Ella confirmed that trials were being conducted in multiple countries. Covaxin was developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with National Institute of Virology, Pune and the Indian Council for Medical Research or ICMR. It is the only truly indigenous vaccine produced in India.
