SBI appointed Dinesh Khara as the new chairman of SBI in place of Rajnish Kumar who has decided to move on from the positive ahead of his actual retirement. Dinesh Khara was the Managing Director of SBI and was handling its corporate and international operations.

In a post-appointment interview, Dinesh Khara has underlined that the intention will be to focus on maintaining the quality of loan book. Khara also added that due to its pedigree, SBI was seeing credit growth of 6-7%, at a time when banks were struggling to build their book.

The level of business at SBI was almost back to 70-80% of the pre-COVID-19 levels while most of the other banks were struggling to even reach 50%. However Khara pointed out that he would not be in a hurry to aggressively monetize subsidiaries in these markets.

The big idea being talked about at SBI is the digital monetization of Yono as a separate entity; something which Rajnish had spoken about at length. However, Khara has been non-committal about Yono plans. Instead, he would prefer to focus on managing asset quality.
