Index number indicates a change from an original or base value. The base value in Index number represents the weighted-average stock price of all the stocks that make up the index. To check the performance of the Index number, one must observe its movement. It moves up or down. In order to understand the direction for the market through the index, investors calculate it each day during the stock market’s open hours.

However, the investor must know that Indexes do not show the entire market. That means, no matter the indexes are down investor will still find stocks reaching new heights on the same day.
