Dearness Allowance (DA) is the variable amount paid to state/central employees. It is given to employees, even pensioners from the state, central government for the services rendered over the years.
DA is a cost of living allowance that is aimed at hedging the ever-increasing inflation. The amount varies for different employees based on their location of employment such as the urban sector, semi-urban sector or the rural sector.Broadly are two different types of Dearness Allowances: 1. Industrial Dearness Allowance (IDA) 2. Variable Dearness

Today, on 9th October 2019, the government declared a 5% hike in DA from 12% to 17% for government employees. It proved like a Diwali bonanza for them. The announcement was made by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar. The increased DA is benefitted to almost 50 lakh employees and over 62 lakh who receive pensions.
