Disinvestment or divestment is the process of a government selling part of its stake in public sector units in order to raise capital for the public exchequer. These funds are then used by the government to fulfill its various social programmes:

- In Union Budget 2018-19, the government set divestment target for FY19 at Rs 80,000 crore.

- In Union Budget 2017-18, the target for disinvestment was Rs 72,500 crore; this was the year the government exceeded its target by achieving divestment proceeds over Rs 1 lakh crore. This over achievement of the divestment target was due to sale of the Centre’s 51% equity stake in HPCL to ONGC.

- Divestment target for 2017-17 was set at Rs 56,500 crore. The government however was only able to gather proceeds to the tune of Rs 47,743 crore.
