In a tough market, the start-up continues to be encouraging. For example, investments in Indian start-ups jumped 322 percent to $5.61 billion in Jul-20 compared to $1.33 billion in Jul-19. Telecom was top of the pops at $4.85 billion, read Jio Platforms. Other sectors included enterprise infrastructure, education technology, realty technology etc.

The cumulative impact of all this effort has been that currently India is home to 21 unicorns, or start-ups with over $1 billion in valuation. Out of these 21 unicorns, 11 were backed by Chinese investors, raising question mark about the wisdom of banning Chinese investments. Nearly one-third of these 21 unicorns are in the ecommerce sector including Paytm, Oyo Rooms, Byju's, Ola Cabs etc.
