For the month of Sep-20, the Indian economy posted a merchandise goods trade deficit of $2.91 billion. However, the Ministry of Commerce has only released the data for merchandise trade because the services trade data will be released by RBI with a lag of 1 month.

For the month of Sep-20, the merchandise imports contracted 19.6% to $30.31 billion on a YOY basis. At the same time, the merchandise exports for the month of Sep-20 were up by 5.27% at $27.40 billion. There was an all-round expansion of merchandise exports and imports in September.

For the cumulative five month period from April to August 2020, the total merchandise imports fell 40.06% to $148.69 billion while the merchandise exports fell by 21.43% to $125.06 billion. This resulted in a 5-month trade deficit of $23.63 billion.
