When you save money, there are 3 things you basically need to focus on. Firstly, your money must be safe; secondly your savings instrument must at least give you a competitive rate of return; and thirdly your savings must be liquid. Here you need to make a trade-off. Bank FDs may give you a lower rate of return, but they are safe and also liquid. On the other hand, company FDs may give you a higher rate of return, but they are neither liquid nor are they as secure as a bank deposit. Some of the major savings instruments include bank FDs, corporate FDs, post office schemes etc.
