On Monday, fortunately, there was black Monday this time around, the Sensex closed more than 500 points higher. However, one could still see that there was an absolute lack of conviction in the market. For that matter, the entire action was only driven by a handful of banks and metal companies, that saw a bout of short-covering on Monday.

Pharma companies may have some reason to cheer with the rapid fall in afflictions in the state of Maharashtra. It goes to show that a combination of lockdown and inoculation is working pretty well. This is favorable for pharma companies as the government will now go very aggressive on a vaccination drive to curb the growth of cases.

FPIs continued to sell on Monday disposing of equities to the tune of Rs.1,112 crore. However, the domestic institutional investors bought Rs.1,023 crore of equities and softened the hit. For April till date, FPIs have sold Rs.9,700 crore inequities and the weak momentum of FPIs continues for the sixth week in succession.

In late Monday trades, the Dow Jones index was weak but there was visible strength in the NASDAQ and also in the European markets. Asia still looks tentative and as a result, the SGX Nifty is marginally in the positive in early trades. Going into the day, the news flows, Asian cues, and the US futures opening could be key factors.
