Broadly, the government has identified production of air conditioners / components, furniture and leather footwear as the key segments where they propose to push exports and reduce global dependence. This could be through a mix of duty incentives, tax breaks and also via other non-fiscal measures. The government is targeting an investment flow of $17 billion from this export thrust. Currently, India imports nearly 30% of demand in the above 3 sectors. The investment will be targeted at reducing this dependence and encourage global players to set up shop in India and produce these products at competitive rates for export purposes. The big opportunity is in large-scale manufacturing that gives economies of scale of the order that China has attempted. Furniture would be the largest component followed by air conditioners and leather footwear.
