
What are the recent highlights of the GST Council meeting?

The GST Council meeting was held on September 17, 2021, and was chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Here are some of the highlights of this meeting:
- GST rate cut on covid 19 essentials has been further extended until 31st December 2021.
- Inverted duty structure on footwear and textiles will be corrected from 1st Jan 2022.
- GST rates on locomotives and certain railway parts have been increased to 18% from the present rate of 12%.
- The national permit fee charged by the states for granting a permit to goods carriage to operate across India has been fully exempted from GST.
- Trainees under the skills development program are also exempt from paying GST.
- GST exemption on the transport of export goods by vessel and air has been further extended by one year till September 2022.
- GST shall be levied on food delivery apps like Zomato and Swiggy at the rate of 5% (restaurant services).
- Pens to attract GST at the rate of 12%.
- The government also had the idea to include Petrol, diesel under the GST purview, however, FM stated that this is not the right time to do so. Hence, there is still no GST on Petrol and Diesel.
