There are some major changes that have been announced with respect to filing of tax returns.

Firstly, it is now possible to file your tax returns without your PAN card. Now Aadhar is good enough. In fact, Aadhar and PAN card have now become interoperable. Even if you don’t have a PAN card and have an Aadhar Card, you can file your returns using your Aadhar card. What is more is that even if you want to make a high value purchase you don’t need to furnish your PAN card any longer! An Aadhar card is good enough.

Secondly, filing of tax returns will be auto filled from your Form 16 and your Form 26AS so that even verification becomes automatic from the tax department. You only need to add if there are some transactions outside the ambit of TDS. This will make the filer’s job a lot easier.

Thirdly, the Income Tax department will get into faceless assessment. You don’t have to any longer go and meet an Assessing Officer to explain any transaction. This will all be done electronically. This will reduce the chances of hounding.

Lastly, there are some additional conditions where filing of tax returns is mandatory irrespective of your income level. Here they are.

· If you have deposited more than Rs.1 crore into one or more current accounts

· If you have travelled abroad during the year and the aggregate spending on yourself is Rs.2 lakhs and equivalent or above.

· If your total electricity bill for the full year is more than Rs.1 lakh

If you fulfil any of the above conditions, you are obliged to file tax returns.
