Shares are basically small pieces of the company. Shares distribute ownership of the company. Any individual, company, and mutual funds are eligible to buy shares. After buying share the buyer becomes the part-owner of the company. Value of the share varies from company to company.
For example, if a company has 1,00 shares of stock outstanding. And a buyer owns 10 shares of the company. Then the buyer becomes the owner of the company and can claim to 1% of the company's assets and earnings.
