There are different views on that. There is one view that considers the lockdown the best approach to keep people indoors and reduce the spread of the virus. On the other hand, some social researchers have suggested that the lock-in may not add much value as the virus could again impact once the lock-in is lifted. Also, the view is that in a country like India with a per capital income of less than $2000, it is hard to keep the lockdown going for too long. These models suggest the lock-down for the most vulnerable groups like aged people, young children and pregnant women.

Scientists and biologists have pointed that the best justification for a lockdown is that the government can keep the spread under control and use the interim period to ramp up their testing facilities, number of emergency beds, expand the infrastructure at hospitals, have a backup plan etc. From that perspective, the lockdown appears to be a fairly good idea at this point of time. The only concern is that a three-week lockdown may be insufficient to prevent a resurgence and, instead, protocols of sustained lockdown with periodic relaxation are suggested. That is apparently what the Indian government is working towards. The next few days could be critical as the centre and the states roll out the plan and time table for the lockdown being extended with the plan of action.
