If you look at the Sensex pack, Bharti Airtel was the big gainer, jumping 20% after the company raised funds to pay its huge statutory dues. Bharti was also helped by concerns over Vodafone Idea’s sustainability as Bharti could be a key beneficiary if Vodafone decides to eventually wind up. Among other gainers in the pack were HUL (up 12%), UltraTech Cement (up 10%), Bajaj Finance (up 10%) and Nestle India (up 10%). There were also stocks meandering on the downside. For example, ONGC fell by 17%, IndusInd Bank was down by 12% and ITC was also down by 10%. ITC was clearly hit by the proposed tax in the budget making cigarettes more expensive. ONGC took a hit on weak global crude prices while IndusInd Bank has faced problems on asset quality. Interestingly, the situation was reversed from last year in 2020 with BSE Small cap index up 8% and BSE Midcap index up by 6%.
