That would depend on whether you want to trade on your account with your own money or you want to trade on behalf of your clients. For example, if you plan to invest or trade with your own money then you don’t need any qualifications and are free to trade based on your judgement. Of course, you need to go through the required KYC before opening your trading account and you will also have to provide additional documentation of risk-taking capacity in case of F&O trading. There are no further qualifications required.

In case you want to become a sub-broker / franchisee or you want to work as a dealer/trader in a broking organization, then you have to pass the relevant modules of the NCFM exam before you are eligible to put in the trades. There is a basic module that all dealers need to go through and then there are specialized modules you need to go through if you are going to trade in cash equity or derivatives or commodities.

These NCFM modules test you on theoretical and practical skills and these certificates are valid for a period of 3 years. After that, you again need to appear for the exam and renew your certificate.

Even outside of the NCFM which is a statutory requirement, there are some basic skills like the ability to read annual reports, reading of basic chart patterns and the clearing and settlement process that you must be fully aware of.
