Trump moved to block shipments of semiconductors to Huawei Technologies from global chipmakers; something that could ramp up tensions with China. In the light of the COVID-19, the US Commerce Department amended an export rule to target Huawei and prevent them from acquiring semiconductors. Huawei needs semiconductors for its widely used smart phones and telecom equipment. Huawei has warned that the Chinese government would retaliate if the rule went into effect. The US is trying to convince allies to exclude Huawei gear from next generation 5G networks alleging that its equipment could be used by China for spying. This could just about worsen the trade war and the subsequent recovery.
