Apparently, the government is now also planning to contribute to employees' share of PF at companies with more than 100 workers. However, the new scheme will only cover only those earning a low salary. This will be an extension to the existing scheme where the Union government is paying EPF contribution of companies employing up to 100 workers of whom 90% earn less than Rs.15,000 monthly. The nature of relaxations is yet to be made public. It is also not clear if government will contribute the entire 24% (both employers and employees share) of the EPF payment or a portion of it. The current proposal is benefiting some 1.1 million workers and if rules are relaxed it could benefit around 2 million low wage earners.
