Let me clarify that this survey that is just out is a very small sample survey conducted among the most vulnerable sections of the society conducted in the state of Maharashtra on the impact of the pandemic on income levels. Broadly, the pandemic appears to have taken its toll because nearly 96% of people surveyed under a food rights campaign in the state of Maharashtra admitted to facing a drop in earnings during the lockdown in 2020.

Job losses and non-availability of casual work were the major factors that drove income levels lower. This is not any official survey or any government sponsored survey. The survey was done by a group of activists across 250 people across some of the major districts of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Pune, Nandurbar, Solapur, Palghar, Nashik, Dhule and Jalgaon.

Based on the survey respondents, it has emerged that 96% of the respondents have also admitted that their earnings remained at lower levels compared to pre-COVID levels. This was the case even 5 months after the lockdown. Most of the respondents belong to the poorer sections earning under Rs.7,000 per month, which nearly 70% of these people earning less than Rs.3,000 per month. In short, the survey was among the most vulnerable sections and the message appears to be that they were hurt the most by the pandemic.
