Russia announced the launch of the world’s first Coronavirus vaccine, laying the ground for mass inoculation. The vaccine was called Sputnik-V and financed by RDIF, the Russian sovereign wealth fund. Putin’s daughter was the first to get vaccinated. They already have a pre-order for 1 billion doses.

It will be a 2-staged injection plan and build lasting immunity for at least 2 years. According to the director of Russia’s Gamaleya National Research Centre, the vaccine used inanimate particles created on the basis of adenovirus. Hence these particles cannot multiply.

Globally, AstraZeneca and Moderna are still conducting final-stage trials of their vaccines. This could put additional pressure on Indian companies like Serum Institute and Wockhardt that have invested heavily in manufacturing billions of doses of the vaccine. The approval is conditional, subject to full testing.
