Recently, Nielsen had reported that a total of 1897 products had been launched in the health and hygiene portfolio since March 2020 compared to 102 last year. However, most of these are post-pandemic innovations and it is not clear if these patterns will sustain.

But there is certainly a shift happening. For example, ITC’s personal care division gets 30% of its business from new products under the Savlon brand. Even Emami is eyeing products in home hygiene after introducing BoroPlus sanitizers and soaps. Clearly the shift is more towards hygiene and sanitation.

Marico launched honey and a range of immunity boosters like Kadha Mix and Golden Turmeric Milk Mix under its Saffola brand. Marico also launched Mediker brand of hand sanitizers and toilet seat disinfectants. All these opportunistic products saw robust demand.

While these products have helped these FMCG companies move sales higher, it is not clear how these products will be received once the COVID threat reduces in the market place. That could be the next big challenge.
