After buying almost Rs.46,200 in equities in August 2020, foreign portfolio investors or FPIs were net sellers in Indian equities in the first two weeks of September. FPIs pulled out Rs.2038 in September in view of the rising tensions in Ladakh and weak global cues.

If you look at the break-up of the numbers, Rs.3510 crore moved out of equities, while Rs.1472 crore was infused into debt in first two weeks by foreign investors. In August 2020, India got FPI inflows of $6.5 billion, while rest of Asia saw outflows of $6.25 billion.

Rising cases of COVID infections in India is also taking its toll on the markets. FPIs have been a tad wary after the -23.4% GDP growth shown in the June quarter and will typically await for some positive signals from high frequency data. RIL continues to attract interest.
