News about the progress Pfizer and Biontech on the COVID vaccine has suddenly spawned a different stock market opportunity. Believe it or not, it has less to do with pharma companies and more to do with refrigeration and coolant companies. Here is why.

The Pfizer RNA based COVID shot needs ultra refrigeration at temperatures that are normally not available. It has to be stored at -74 degrees Celsius, which is equivalent to the temperature you would find in the continent of Antarctica. That is the problem.

Globally, most logistics firms do run existing cold chains but the temperatures they can store are nowhere close to -74 degrees. Refrigeration companies don’t offer cooling at that kind of temperature definitions and fresh capacity may not justify the costs.

There is a stop gap solution that is currently being considered. Freezer boxes using helium based technology can be used to transport vaccines with the help of dry ice. That is something that can address the issue of refrigeration.

I am not sure if there is going to be any big opportunity for such refrigeration companies and it looks more like a euphoria being built up. Take it with a pinch of salt.
