The good news for the Tata Group is that it is getting a massive digital makeover. The group is building an all-in-one e-commerce app for its entire range of consumer products and services. These could range from jewelry to cars to coffee to agrochemicals.

The first cut is under review and a launch of this consolidated app is expected around the end of 2020 or early 2021. In short, the Tata Group is looking at a significant presence online in a market where internet users are estimated to touch reach 900 million by 2023.

Tata will also make its first genuine attempt to catch up with rivals like Amazon and Flipkart as well as take on the latest entrant in the retail online market place, Reliance Industries. RIL has just finished raising $20 billion from marquee investors by selling stake in Jio Platforms.

Pratik Pal, who is a 35 year TCS veteran, is helping with the digital transformation of the Tata group. He brings a stellar experience dealing with retail chains like Wal-Mart, Tesco, Target, Best Buy and others during his consultancy stint at TCS.

Tata Group makes cars, air conditioners, smart watches and tea and this could be the first online attempt to consolidate all these products under a single market place. The current digitization drive is being personally spearheaded by N Chandrasekharan of Tata Sons.
