The latest update is that Reliance Retail Ventures or RRVL had decided to conclude its fund raising exercise for the time being. With a little over a tenth of the retail arm sold to PE investors, the parent has decided to keep further moves on hold.

Reliance Retail Ventures has till date raised a sum of Rs.47,267 crore by placing close to 10.09% stake in the retail arm to global PE and sovereign funds. This gives RRVL an overall valuation of Rs.468,500 crore; marginally lower than the valuation for the digital business of Jio Platforms.

Like in the Jio Platforms, the investor list in RRVL is also a marquee list and reads like a who’s who of the world of PE investing and sovereign investing. The investors in RRVL include marquee names like Silver Lakes, KKR, General Atlantic Partners, TPG, GIC Singapore, Mubadala, PIF and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

If you look at the above list, you will notice that apart from the Government Investment Corporation of Singapore or GICS; all the other names had already invested in Jio Platforms. Unlike Jio Platforms, which had strategic partners like Google and Facebook, RRVL has no strategic investor, although the name of Wal-Mart or Amazon has been touted.

Regarding the FEL deal, there is not much for RRVL to do as the legal issues have to be sorted out between Future group and Amazon regarding the right of first refusal. It could most likely be settled outside the court considering that Amazon being a global company cannot invest in multi-brand retail, anyways.
