The Pune based Serum Institute promoted by the Cyrus Poonawala group has received an additional $150 million in funding commitments from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This is intended to manufacture an extra 100 million COVID-19 vaccine doses.

The foundation has earmarked these funds to help India and other lower income countries meet their health challenges. With this boost, the enhanced manufacturing capacity of COVID-19 vaccines stands at 200 million doses to be distributed in lower income nations.

Even the pricing for this dosage has been done at an economical price of $3 per dose that translates into just about Rs.250/dose. The whole idea of this endeavour is that the vaccines are not cornered by the rich countries but equitably distributed to poorer countries.

There are 2 vaccine doses that the Serum Institute is simultaneously working on. If successful, the AstraZeneca vaccines will be available in 61 countries while the Novavax vaccines will be made available in 92 countries in all, largely third world nations.
