As per the market regulator SEBI, a retirement scheme is an open-ended retirement solution-oriented scheme. These schemes usually come with a lock-in period of 5 years or till retirement whichever is earlier. Thus due to enforced conditions, a retirement saving scheme may be more relevant for those who struggle to stay disciplined with their retirement plan or find it difficult to decide on the right mix for their retirement portfolio.

However, a portfolio of open-ended schemes created after conducting a comprehensive risk profiling exercise with the investor may serve better due to the flexibility of review/restructuring and investor’s control on the accumulating corpus. An investor who has an investment horizon of 10 years, may incline towards equity as an asset class for generating long-term capital appreciation.
