For the current Kharif season of 2020, the area under coverage is up by 9% at 106 million hectares on the back of a vastly improved monsoon in the month of August. Like in most other agri segments, even Kharif sowing has not been impacted by COVID-19.

Paddy acreage increased 12% to 378 lakh hectares, pulses acreage was up 7% at 133 lakh hectare while coarse cereals saw acreage was up 5% at 174 lakh hectares. Oilseeds saw a 14% increase in acreage at 191 lakh hectares in this season so far.

Among the major cash crops, area under sugarcane was up at 52.19 lakh hectares while cotton acreage was up 3.4% at 128 lakh hectares. The good news is that the average pan-India rainfall stands at 663 mm as against the normal level of 628.3 mm.

The government and the markets have been heavily counting on a strong monsoon this year so that the sharp spike in food inflation can be contained. It is also important that rural spending chips in even as urban India remains under the spell of COVID-19.
