Hughes Network Systems will invest $50 million in the winning consortium, led by the UK government and Bharti Enterprises, to take over OneWeb. Hughes is already the global leader in broadband satellite networks. One Web had filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2020 and the UK government had been under pressure to rescue the company. Hughes will also continue as a trusted technology and distribution partner to OneWeb.

OneWeb has proposed a mega-constellation of satellites in low-earth orbit to deliver affordable wireless Internet services globally. Incidentally, Hughes Communications India and Bharti Airtel are in the process of combining their satellite broadband operations.
