Overall, markets lost their way during the week ended 14 August. It was a week of net losses for the heavyweights as 6 out of the 10 most valuable companies on the Nifty in terms of their market capitalization, lost Rs.78,275 crore in aggregate.

During the week, big boy Reliance lost Rs.20,666 crore in market cap while software giant and the second most valuable Indian company, TCS, lost Rs.19,700 crore. In the midst of the brouhaha over the AGR issue, Bharti Airtel also tanked Rs.17,294 crore during the week.

Then there were other value destroyers on the Nifty. HUL, HDFC Bank and Kotak bank lost Rs.21,000 crore between them, which could have been worse had the inflation data and the doubts over the future trajectory of interest rates had been announced earlier in the week.

Gainers were few and far between. On the gaining side, housing finance major HDFC managed to add Rs.12,610 crore in market value during the week. Even as other stocks like Infosys, ICICI Bank and ITC added some hopes to the rally, impact was marginal at best.
