Major heavyweights on the Nifty saw value depletion to the tune of Rs.137,000 crore during the week ended 15 May 2020. Of course, Reliance Industries was the biggest contributor to the fall, losing nearly Rs.65,232 crore or half of all losses. The sharp fall in RIL was on the back of the stock going ex-rights on 13 May, leading to institutional selling. RIL had rallied sharply by nearly 80% post March 23, so some correction was in the offing anyways. Other heavyweight stocks that lost value during the week included the likes of HDFC Bank, Hindustan Unilever, ICICI Bank and Infosys. The surprising gainer during the week was Bharti Airtel followed by some buying interest in ITC. Bharti has been going through a major re-rating after it managed to settle the penalty issues with DOT.
