With the Nifty scaling above 13,500 and the Sensex above 46,000, clearly the heavyweights saw addition to their heft. For the week ended 11 Dec, 8 out of the 10 most valuable companies on the Nifty index, added a sum of Rs.153,041 crore in market capitalization.

Who were the big gainers. Of course, the biggest gainers were Hindustan Unilever and Reliance Industries; both of which did very well last week. For example; HUVR added Rs.43,596 crore during the week while RIL added Rs.37,434 crore to market cap. While HUVR was buoyed by the defensive shift, RIL made some big announcements on 5G.

There were other market cap accretions too during the week. Software giant TCS added Rs.21,558 crore to its market value while Kotak Bank added Rs.14,799 crore and all-weather stock Infosys added Rs.12,097 crore to its market value. In addition, smaller contributions also came from stocks like ICICI Bank, HDFC and Bharti Airtel.

There were only two value losers in the week; both from the financials space. HDFC Bank saw continued pressure on the ban on its digital businesses while Bajaj Finance appears to be taking a break after the really. However, in both the cases, the overall loss of market cap in these names was quite small and insignificant.
