In the furore over Kashmir and COVID-19, some important economic reforms of the government have been grossly overlooked. For example, the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019 allowed domestic companies to pay 22% if they did not avail any incentives or exemptions. In addition, start-ups registered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) were exempted from angel tax. MAT was reduced from 18% to 15%. On the financial front, the government also pushed the idea of unified financial regulator. It also proceeded with plans for disinvestment of BPCL, Container Corporation and Shipping Corporation. Stake sale in LIC was one among the many significant decisions to revive the stalled disinvestment agenda. The PM-KISAN has been extended to all farmers rather than just small and marginal farmers making them eligible to receive Rs.6000 annually. In addition, the government changed the definition of MSME sector, dismantled Essential Commodities Act and the APMCs, higher FDI in defence, a new coal auction policy.
