The National Pension Scheme (NPS) comes under the purview of the central government as well as the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). The PFRDA regulates the NPS’ operations and offers online as well as offline methods to open the NPS account.

Online process to open a National Pension Scheme (NPS) account

If you choose to open an NPS account online, you can do so in less than half an hour. Opening an account online (on enps.nsdl.com) is easy, if you link your account to your PAN, Aadhaar and/or mobile number.

You can easily validate the registration using the one-time password (OTP) that’s sent to your mobile. This will generate a PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number), which you can use for your NPS login.

Offline process to open a National Pension Scheme (NPS) account

If you want to open an NPS account offline or manually, you will have to find a Point of Presence (PoP) first.

From the PoP, collect a subscriber form and submit it along with your KYC papers. If you have already completed the KYC formalities with the bank, then you can ignore this step.

Once you make the initial investment (not less than Rs. 500 or Rs. 250 monthly or Rs. 1,000 annually), the PoP will send you a PRAN – Permanent Retirement Account Number.

This number and the password will come to you in a sealed welcome kit will help you operate your account. Please note, there is a one-time registration fee of Rs. 125 for this process.
